Auto trans trouble...

My car was leaking some auto trans fluid from a small crack in the trans cooler lines and the box was starting to not "click" into gear and didn't want to stay in gear all the time (It would only pop out of gear when you were stoped and sometimes slip on takeoff, once past 1st it was fine)), I've fixed the problem now but the gearbox still doesn't want to stay in gear all the time (only seems to happen when the gearbox is cold, after a bit of a drive it is fine). The box was a little low on fluid but there was still heaps in it, what are the chances that my box is fucked?
Will a proper service (Fluid and Filter) fix it or will I just be wasting my $$$.
In other words what could be the cause of the problem, (clutch pack?) and how hard is it to fit a new clutch pack if it is stuffed? (easier to change the whole box?)
Cheers Wilbo
