alternator problems

I am having alt troubles in my little torana, I think it is cactus. It s an old, externally regulated unit. I have another one but it is internally regulated I think, it only has the B+ and N (charge light) connections. If I put this one in and connect the 2 wires, the car runs on it alone, but dies when the lights are turned on (no battery connected).
The old alternator had a B+, a N and a F.
Can anyone tell me how to connect the internal reg. alt. to the old girl??
Thanks, Tim.

The new Alternator has just one power connection B+ which goes straight to + side of battery.(follow the lead)
Disconnect the external regulator.
The N is the connection for the charge warning light in the dash...you don't need to connect this to get the alternator working.
Don't run the motor with battery disconnected you can do real damage to car electrics!
To test the alternator: measure battery volts..13.8 approx is charge volts, look for this when fast idle and lights on (and also off too).

Torana's had both, the very old ones had generators Thanks for the help with the alternator.
So internally regulated units only really need the B+ to the battery. Why did my 1ggte alt have lots of connections on it?

i don't suppose anybody knows what >70amp alternators use the same mounts/pulley/pulley-offset/case-size/etc as those used on 18R?
and what models/engines they come out of?
I would like to bump capacity from the 45-50amps available from my standard (exchange) unit to something pumping out 70-80 amps? and not rely on an external regulator?
Am moving to EFI (megasquirt) and EI (megajolt-light) and think the two CPUs will require more stable & studier power than my current uinit provides.

Um, dude, I don't think your 2 computers are going to need 70 amps!!
Pretty sure your stock electrics should be able to run the comps, maybe if you ran big coil packs (and lots of them). You'd only really need a big alt for big stereo gear, or some kind of huge custom lighting display or something. 70 amps is a lot of power...

yes, maybe 70A is a bit over the top, tim
... but i'll need to power:
coil packs, 2 x CPUs, 4 injectors, bigger fuel pump, elec fan, etc
none of which the original electrical system was designed to accomodate.
and most of it needs 12V regardless of electrical load (e.g. rainy night, demister+wipers going flat-out, lights on hi-beam, etc... ).
however, your concern about my willingness to over-engineer is appreciated
