Why do my diffs keep crapping themselves? Sat, 22 March 2003 12:22 Go to previous message
It's not the gears breaking or anything (yet Evil or Very Mad), it's just the bearings at the front of the centre, the pinion bearings I guess.
Anyway, I've put in 2 second hand diffs in the last 5-6 months (with the car being off the road for 2 of those months) for the same symptoms, and now the third diff has gone the same way, it it seemed in really goon knick before I put it in.
Anyone know why this might be happening?

The oil level is fine, even a bit overfull when I checked it.
I'm using the same oil in my diff as my g'box, Castrol VMX80.
When I removed the fill plug there was a pressure build up in my diff, I know there's a vent of the top of the diff, what sort of problems could this being blocked cause?
I had my d'shaft shortened & balanced at the same time I installed the first second-hand diff, I guess I'll get the balancing rechecked if all else fails.

Thanks for any help.

Oh, and if anyone has a spare T292 celica diff for sale (4.1:1) please let me know. I gotta fix it by saturday!

EDIT: and I forgot to say, I'm not heaps rough on them either, I give it a launch now & then but don't crank burnouts or anything. It's only a little 4age after all. Smile
The current diff crapped itself on a 350km or so 100km/h trip, with some bumpy roads. Nothing too serious.
I was also on a speed unlimited section of road & travelled at around 130-150 for about a half hour or so.
