GTECH accuracy? Wed, 19 March 2003 10:47 Go to next message
How accurate are the GTECH performance timers supposed to be? During some testing of my 4AGTE last night (on a private road of course Very Happy) the gtech gave a reading of 13.02 seconds at 190.5 km/h (119mph) for the 1/4 mile.

The terminal speed sounds a bit optimistic, but i'd be more than happy if it were true! This was repeated on 2 runs. If it is a reasonably accurate figure, then i'm off to eastern creek with some slicks (& a few more psi) for a timecard!

They are pretty accurate if setup correctly. the most it would be is about 13.17

A friend of mine has tested this at Eastern creek and compared it to a timeslip

190 does sound a little optimistic, if you're only running a 13

as said, they have to be set up properly (and even then aren't 100%). if you set them up wrongly, they can read a long way out.

apparently this is especially a problem in cars that squat off the line

my car doesnt squat off the line due to a fairly stiff rear end, although there was a fair bit of wheelspin through first & second gear which would have contributed to the slower time for the 190kph. The gtech was set at exactly 0.0 on a flat road.

I just used a g-tech pro in my crapbox ae102 7afe 3 or 4 days ago.

I set it to 0.0 exactly on a very flat street and got 8.something 0-100 then low 9.something 0-100, w/ a friend in the passenger seat and a full tank?? The old stopwatch test suggested a reading of about 10.5-11 seconds. It was also reading a 0-100 time before i even reached 100km/h (was still doing around 95 or less).

However, it read much more believable times in my mate's mitsu fto.

I reckon it just wasn't pointing straight when I set it in my car Rolling Eyes

Your speedo will be off, but 8.something and 9.something, well you'd be doin pretty good to get those times with a full tank and a mate in the car.

I was pulling low 10's (WOW! No No No) in my AE93 with the 7AFE.
hehe and the 1/4 mile time... well a fully sik 16.something seconds!!

The 0-100 was not far off compared to the ol stop watch, can't wait till I get the fresh rebuilt turbo back on the soarer and get it crankin with a G-Tech... Evil or Very Mad

G-tech mph is not measured the same way it will be measured at the creek or at any official drag meet.

The speed reported is literally a terminal speed as calculated at a time when the error in a g-tech is at its greatest ( at the end of the run).
Normally terminal speed of a drag car is the average over a certain distance BEFORE (30 0r 60 feet ?) the finish line and so will be significantly less than as calculated by a g-tech.

In my experience g-techs are a little optimistic, 2 runs are not enough, better to do a whole lot of runs exclude the fastest and slowest and then average the rest.

Also it is a good idea to not slam gears home, esp 1st to second. Using this method it is possible to further improve your times and HP from the g-tech.

about a 30% higher hp figure can be acheived just through smashing 1st to 2nd.

You guys are kidding right? You can't combine accurate and Gtech in the same sentence. Take your damn car to the drags.. it's cheaper than a gtech, it's legal, you get a printout of it AND there's no speculation.

I do take my 'damn' car to the drags

its really great having to organise a trailer everytime because the fucking track is 300km away Mad . That aside, i'd rather go there anyday.

i have had a gtech in the car at Calder and compared to the timing equipment

if your car sqauts bad or wheelstands (like mine) the times are WAAAY out .especially MPH

when i first fitted ct26 to the 1uz at 6 psi i ran a 12.9 and gtech said 12.4

the biggest error you get with them is NOT using a DEAD level test track just a slight up or downhill and the results are way out .

im keen to use a dyno plus the have auto zero so small variations dont matter and they compenstae for the squat effect

Quoting from the g-tech requires a certain degree of honesty, both with yourself and with others when later skiting about times.

When testing - assess the road and HONESTLY say whter it is flat or not - if not then there is no point of running there.

There is a certain place - just off the f3 north of wyong. where late night runs can be seen to occur. Guys there quote amazing times as measured by g-tech's run after run.

Fact is Nann's corolla can do a 13 second pass under the same conditions. They refuse to acknowlege it is not perfectly flat -even though i have been accused of jumping the start there because i couldnt use the handbrake to launch and actually rolled away !!!!! - nearly hit the dude counting us down Shocked

anyway - learn how the g-tech works, think about what might compromise its accuracy and then use it honestly as a comparison tool and nothing else. They can be fun, and definatley good enough to settle differences without going door to door.
