ok I have a 1976 ra23 with the old 18rg. and I have started to crave more power. My 2 fav options are a 13b-t or a 1uzfe (turbo conversion planed for later on) both appeal to me for different reasons but I tend to like the idea of the 1uzfe abit more.

Price wise a 1uzfe conversion would probably be cheaper for me as I have a friend doing the same conversion in a ta22 at the moment so i can learn from his mistakes.

What engine would you go with and why?
What problems would i face in putting either of these in my ra23?
Would my w55 handle much punishment from either of these engines?

any help would be appreciated Very Happy

What state are you in? Start by looking into the largest motor (Turbo and non-turbo)that you can put in in you state, cause in some states a turbo 1UZ (and maybe the 13B-T) are illegal into a RA23!

If your mate is already doing a 1UZ conversion then you could share knowledge and parts.

W55 isn't going to last long behind either. But it all depends on how you treat it I suppose.

If you twin turbo the V8 then the gearbox won't last a week.

13B-T have been done before so there should be a few people that know about the conversion.

Umm maybe the R154 (5 speed from behind 7M-GTE's and 1JZ's) or the 6 speed off a MK4 supra (From a 2JZ-GTE). These will likely require large modifications to the trans tunnel!

And the prices are also not nice either Shocked
(Also you will need a custom bellhousing as 1UZ's never came in manual Sad )

Cheers

Belhousings can be found for 1UZ -> W5x or 1UZ -> R154.

Dellow Automotive do the R154 one, and Carbontech Replicas do the W58 one.

How much do you have to spend on this conversion? OVER 6 grand?

Well im expecting to spend over $6k on the conversion. I currently have a w55 in my ra23 which is why i wanted to use one.

How could i strenghen the gearbox?
What size exhaust (single one) would work nicely with a 1uz-fe?

A W55 isn't going to last long behind a 1UZ; I've only seen them bolted up to 4-cylinder engines. I'd be looking for a late-model W58 to handle that sort of torque.

Just for interest's sake...Do the 100-series 'Cruisers come out with a 2UZ-manual tranny combo, or are they all Auto???

If there was a manual option, I'm wondering if that box would bolt-in as a manual option for 1U owners, or is that too simple, as the 'Cruisers only come as Autos? (My guess).

I'm not sure if the V8 cruisers come with a manual, but if they do it's a 4WD box which is totally useless for anything but a 4WD. It's also about the size of a small house.

That assumes that the transfer case is part of the gearbox unit? (As in, not mounted behind the 'box in order to then drive both "ends"???) Besides, you'd only be looking at using the bell-housing, (If it were possible). Looks like I'll have to find one and crawl underneath...

But, yes, they do come standard as a 5-speed manual.

Go to a 4WD wrecker and look at a Landcruiser box... you will soon realise that it can't realistically be used for anything but a Landcruiser.

Old Landcruisers definately have the transfer box sitting above the gearbox. (Same as the old Tercel actually!)

I've yet to be under a new landcruiser though.

That's a good question really - two of my favourite engines. I'd tend to go the rotor though, mainly for the sheer size of the V8. Series IV turbo motor + gearbox, basic rebuild/reseal/dowelling, decent turbo+management, and she's done. Rotor's are a lot cheaper to rebuild than a piston engine, then again a 1UZ likely wouldn't need a rebuild...

i would say go for a 13bt... get a series 5 rx7 half cut or maybe a 4 if you cant find a 5... i prefer a 13bt because they are small light and you can make big hp with little mods smallness and light weight engine means it wil handle alot better then a heavy v8 in it and still you godda build the motor again to suit turbo where as the 13bt already ahve that and is probably 1/4 of the weight of a 1uz you use the rx7 gearbox for it but you will haveta get new engine munts made up and gearbox mounts done but thats not a drama.. will be alot easier then a v8 for it and just godda get tailshaft modified.. you will haveta do all that with the v8 but 13bt wil be alot cheaper and easier to do.. plus you will have alot more room int he engine bay and will be easier to work on
