had similar problem with a 4K.
if you chuck on a Jaycar HEI kit, no probs. it uses the points as a trigger and has a fixed spark length, and maximises dwell.
with the kit and using stock points, my 4K does at least 8Krpm (on the dyno at dyno day 5)
will smooth out the power curve a bit by giving better ignition.... well, did for me
