First of all jack the front of the car up. Have a look at where the wishbones join the xmember, there are bushes in there, you should be able to see them. If they look shitty they most likely are. Now with the steering it sounds like balljoints. While the car is up grab the wheel top and bottom and wiggle it in and out and see if you have play. If you do you will need to replace the ball joints. It's to be expected with a 10+ old car.
