Gearbox Problem (T50, 4AGE, AE86)

Hey all, had a lil problem with my gearbox...
Driving along (about 2 hours after getting a free flowing exhaust), I came to a set of traffic lights.
Now, taking off, a really fast clicking sound (that got faster and louder as rev's increased) all through 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th (but not 4th)
I pulled into a servo and had a poke around, I noticed a seal on the right of the gearbox was just, not connected.
I hopped under to see if I could somehow plug it back in, but it's as if it was previously glued on and had just come off (it's a T50 gbox from a 4ac.) I had the car towed home (for the 5th time this year), and I had a look at a spare gearbox I have (But I don't know what condittion it's in) it's a T50 from a 4age, and this one dosen't have that seal on the middle right hand side (when looking from the front of the bonnet).
I thought that the clicking noise might be just because of a lack of fluid in the gearbox? but that may have already ruined the gearbox. Any feed back or advice would be great right about now as I can't get it to a mechanic till monday.
I've never changed a gearbox before, Anyone know how to rebuild a gearbox and can gimme a breif rundown? I just wanna make sure my spare one will work before I pay a mechanic top dollar to rebuild it if it dosen't need rebuilding or I could do it myself.
And also, this may sound rather stupid but.. do you have to remove the engine to remove and refit a gearbox? I'm guessing yes, but who knows, thanks.
