Digital Tacho in a Camry?

Heya guys,
At the moment I'm driving a 1987 Camry Stationwagon, its a rather fat beast with no power steering or anything special. It does however have 4 wheels and because its been in the family its whole life is mechanically perfect and actually gets off the line pretty quickly One annoying feature, where a tacho should be is a rather large, and irritating clock(it works mind u so you can see how late for work you are..). I work at Dick Smith and we sell a rather nice digital tacho kit which I want to put into the car. I've asked around the guys at work as I didn't know whether you could put a tacho in a car that doesn't actually have a tacho in it, apparently all a tacho does is read the voltage drop from the coil and display the RPM? I've been told it will work, but it can do funny things to the ECU(depending on the ECU).This is my question, has anyone installed this kit an any EFI Toyota, or does anyone see any problems with installing it? Thanks guys.
Info on the kit(the one I'm getting is the same, but its got a row of LEDs showing redline and comes in a nice little box) :
