My tips for buying (anything):
Ring around ALL of the importers
Be prepared to buy one the second they say it is available
Be prepared to pay cash
Never buy anything when you're desparate for it
Wait until a buyer is desparate to sell
Also, keep an eye out for private sales. Generally private sellers are selling for a reason and they generally need the money. Either they've written their car off, blown up the motor and have bought a half cut to replace it, they urgently need money, they have decided the box they bought is too much effort to fit, etc...
Being an item that people regard as expensive, a seller probably won't get a lot of GENUINE enquiries, so let them know you're interested early in the piece.
Wait a while, then remind them you're there with your low offer but are a guaranteed cash sale. One in the hand is worth two in the bush. It's all good to say they're worth $2000, but when you're a private seller it's hard to get the exposure to a large customer base that an importer would.
You may get it, you may not. Like I said, don't buy when you're desparate or you'll overpay. Be prepared to let a few go. Even though they're rare, they are still out there. Wait
