Cam shafts are not cheep to manufacture as they require casting, machining and hardening. The main benefit of a twin cam head is in most cases it removes the rocker arms, removing some inertia from the valve system, allowing the engine to rev a bit harder without reducing reliability. Hence improves power through increased RPM (obviously cam/fuel is different to take advantage of the higher RPM). A twin cam engine also gives the designers more freedom with valve angles (angle between exhaust and inlet valves). This can improve combustion chamber design. [Report message to a moderator]
