Sat, 10 May 2003 07:55 Some years ago, Mazda demonstrated a rotary running on hydrogen as a potential zero emissions vehicle, but the pen pushers didn't like it, because, being a rotor, it burnt a very small amount of lubricating oil for the seals, therefore they termed it must produce (immeasurable?) 'harmful' emissions. Also, on steam engines, really speaking they don't require a huge amount of development - they are already many times more thermally efficient than an internal combustion engine - they are kept out of transport simply because the support systems (firebox, boiler, water tank, etc.) are a touch impractical... But have a think about what nearly all power stations, be they gas, coal, nuclear, etc. run off of... Steam turbines. Diesel power plants aren't exactly known for their great efficiency, and are only used where nothing else is viable. It really is a shame we don't see greater use of rotary engines, but then their capacity/power advantage comes from the fact that they have three firing strokes per revolution, rather than one every two. Hence the reason a 13B (1.3 litre) Mazda engine can rip out 700kw at the wheels with enough development. Now if someone likes to get to work and knock up a rotor with a capacity of about 4 litres, then consider me sold [Report message to a moderator]
