librettos' can be a pain. and not reliable - noisy HDD's too
an early dell series are not bad and easily under $1k.
ibm thinkpads are also pretty good - also under $1k - prolly more hard going than the dells.
just watch the batteries, try and get one with a working battery, otherwise if you've got to get another/get it recoed you'll be up for some $$$
