To answer your first question: it's only worth rebuilding if it's stuffed in the first place. Just because the box came out of a wreck doesn't mean the box itself is in need of a rebuild. I'd recommend you chuck it in the car as is, and IF it makes bad noises or gives trouble, pull it out and rebuild it.
