How to mask cam cover detail... ???

im trying to paint my cam covers... seems simple enough huh?
not quite...
im painting them with black VHT wrinkle finish, and want to mask the depressed lettering and stripes in the covers which i will have already painted a different colour. i need some way of protecting these depressions from the wrinkle paint, that will leave a sharp, clean edge, and not hurt the other paint underneath it.
ive had my first crack at it with this cool, paint-on latex, and it didnt work, the edges of the maked area tore badly when the laytex streched out from underneath the paint.
ive read about wax and vasoline too, but not tried them yet. wax seems like a good idea as i can fill the depressions, wait for the wax to dry, sand the upper surface back so the transition is nice and clean/sharp.... but how on earth do you get the wax back out?
vasoline, seems like a good idea, but im unsure of how well you can apply it with some accuracy...
anyone have some ideas? ever done it yourself, and how did you do it???
cheers
