I dont know how deep the depressions are you're talking about, but candle wax would be the best way
If the depressions are level, just pour the wax in while your engine is slightly warm. This way the wax won't harden fully, and will make it really easy you cut out the edges where you don't want to paint.
Then the job will be as good as your artwork 
Just make sure to re-check once the engine has cooled, as the wax may shrink, re-shape, or crack, and might require some minor repairs
