Just get some very thin MDF or similar, and glue it on. Then get a sheet of very thin foam or similar, lay around path area with glue, and re-carpet to whatever colour you want! You will still retain the indents in the shelf. You may not even have to get foam if you get MDF thin enough. The carpet may cover it up. Perhaps yu could patch it from underneath the shelf.
