Early Celicas like my RA23 use backing plates from the factory, so it can't be too dodgy! The backing plate I made is clearly stronger than the original item (thicker steel with ribbing added) and it uses the same mounting points, so I find it hard to believe it would flex under any conditions. Of course you should discuss this with an engineer before embarking on such a project.
