Sun, 01 June 2003 15:39 For the overwhelming expense of the head gasket or a top set, would it not be safer just to change it? It is unlikely that the water pressure will ever exceed the oil pressure. The cooling system pressure is set by the radiator cap at usually 8, 13 or 15 PSI dependent on the cap. Oil pressure is lowest at idle and should be at least 8 PSI, and unless the engine is boiling the pressure in the cooling system should also be below this. As soon as the engine rises above idle oil pressure generally jumps to 15 PSI plus depending on the condition of the engine. Not saying that this is justification for not changing the head gasket. Consider it would cost under 100 bucks to change prolly around $50-60 (with your experience - do it at work), and how much it would cost for a tow if it decides to die anyway (about 50 to 80 bucks)!?!?!?!?
