The only time I've done this we tried two methods.
First we tried the traditional heat gun and scraper. This took a looooonnngg time to do a small area and got us rather discouraged. Seeing as how we were Chemistry and Engineering students at the time we had a look at what we were trying to do and came up with a different plan of attack.
Second attempt. We went to the Chem labs at uni and got 2 eski's full of dry ice then put this over the sound deadener. Once the dry ice had sublimated we hit the floor with a hammer a couple of times and then picked up all of the frozen tar with tongs. This was my favourite method because it had close to zero effort involved and also made super chilly beverages available while waiting for the dry ice to do it's thing.
