If you are trying to do it on the cheap at the moment, just do whatever you need to to get it working then fix it when you can afford it. Sure it may be a bit more laggy or restrictive, but at least you'll be on the road.
Having the stock piping changed is a pretty good idea in the long run since it is twisty as hell once in a Sprinter.
