	heya...

the top end of the ol girl has this really pronounced, course, harmonic, rattling tap in it... kind of like a tappet thats out of spec, but much 'heavier'. this has been shitting me up the wall, though i suspect its just cause the old donk is getting old.

it is most obvious in a 'neutral' power situation, ie in gear, when youre cruising at speed, and *just* lift off the loud pedal - just so youre not providing power, but arent compression braking either. its a tiny little piece of pedal area where the engine is perfectly paced to road speed - a no-load situation i guess.

anyway, its most obvious around say 3000 rpm.

upon closer inspection, it seems to be coming from the front of the timing cover (cyl # 1 or #2, or the timing gear).

now ive gone and done the following:

-reset all tappets to tolerance

-tightened all valve train fasteners

-replaced and retesioned the timing chain tensioner bolt.

-new oil with lucas additive

none of the above really fixed it, though i think adding the lucas oil stabiliser made it little quieter. all the other attempts did very little.

so im down to:

-the timing chain has sretched beyond hope

-the timing chain nylon vibation dampers (??) are fubar

-the rocker arms are virating on the rockers shafts

-the rocker arms are sliding up and down the rocker shafts in a harmonc fashion against the locator springs.

ayone have any other ideas?

none of the above strike me as potentially fatal - just annoying. anyone have any thoughts on this? im cruising around far western NSW at the moment, and the noise is a little unnerving i the middle of nowhere. im not too keen on spending cashola on the 5m, but am wondering if theres anything serious i should consider??

cheers
