The only three reasons an engine will backfire up the intake are: 1) To far advanced 2) Running very lean (with respect to methanol blown engines) 3) Inlet valve open during ignition I know that you said that you heard the engine running previously but have you done a dry and wet compression test yet? Or even a cylinder leak down test? Assuming everything else is ok, it MAY have a bent valve(s)/damaged valve seat(s) or blown head gasket between 2 and 3. Tell us how you go.
