Sorry MUNKI but I'm pretty sure that the "R" meant that the engines were for use with regular fuel (ie. not 98 octane as was required with the original 18RG motors).
That is why all the 18RGR engines took a drop in compression from their predecessors.
I have heared two theories behind the "U" designation.
1) Japanese emission spec.
2) Japanese fitted air conditioner compressor
I think the relationship between these two, the presence of some sort of air pump, means that the true meaning of the letter might have got lost in translation somewhere between Japanese and English.
If anyone can say that they are 100% certain of either of these theories I would like to hear what you've heard.
