I was originally torn between the 200SX, WRX and Celica, but my wife liked the Celica the best so that's what we got (grin). Performance is average below about 3000 RPM improving rapidly above that and sensational above 6000 RPM when the VVTL-i high lift/duration cam lobes come into play. The effect is somewhat like a turbo coming on boost. Driven to the max it is quite exhilarating and can give a good account of itself against others in its class. The 6 speed gearbox is a delight to use, handling is good and the brakes work fine. Visibility is good except for the rear quarters and the spoiler does protrude into the rear view. However with properly adjusted side mirrors you get used to it fairly quickly and don't notice it much. Fuel consumption is excellent both around town (around 9.5 l/100kms) and on the highway (around 7 l/100kms) although it does require premium unleaded. The car is very comfortable on a long trip except that road noise can be intrusive on some surfaces. Tyre wear is very good my first set lasted 40,000 kms with regular rotation. Redbook shows average private sale price as $22,000 - $25000 for a late 1999/2000 model. Mine is now 2 years old and has done 50,000 Kms and has been very reliable apart from having the auxilliary drive belt tensioner replaced under warranty (a common problem). It has been serviced every 10,000 Km's by the dealer and I have always done intermediate 5000Km oil & filter changes myself. I always use Mobil 1 10W-30 oil which I consider mandatory for performance engines even though its expensive. I previously owned a 1995 6th gen Celica before this one. Would I buy another one? Probably depending on what the next gen is like when it comes out supposedly next year. Go take a test drive and see what you think. [Report message to a moderator]
