First thing is get the head bolts re-torqued a little beyond factory spec. Then go to autobarn and get some spark plugs but specify "one step colder". Fit the plugs, replace the oil (type depends on the condition of your engine, personally I run a high quality synthetic), oil filter, change the coolant, get the timing etc all spot on and factory-standard before you start making any modifications. Also worth looking at replacing the timing belt depending on kms.
Then your first modification should be a 3" exhaust straight off the turbo. Don't f_ck around with shiny mufflers, 5" tips, or stainless steel.. a mandrel bent 3" mild steel exhaust with a generic 3" cat and one or two generic 3" straight thru mufflers will be quiet and effective. My exhaust cost like $900...
Your next accessory should be a boost gauge (about $50-$150 depending on taste.. you can spend more but you're only wasting money). Then add a bleed valve (about $100 new) and set the boost to around 10psi. Any higher and you will hit boost cut on gear change (auto... manual you could go a touch higher).
This should have you easily into the 13's (if you can drive!)
I would suggest that for longevity from the auto you fit an aftermarket oil cooler ($200) and get the shifts tightened up a bit (about $400 if you take the gearbox to a shop yourself... about double that if you take them the car!).
Should end up with a reliable quick car as long as it wasn't a cr@pper when you bought it.
