Thanks, I spend too much of my time talking and thinking about supras
EXHAUST
My exhaust had two mufflers, I notice that they drone a lot with only one muffler - if yours has two it might be worth adding another. A lot of people will tell you that this effects power negatively - I would be surprised if you notice any difference at all, it would be a couple of horsepower at most. If it bothers you, then fix it.. and if a few hp bothers you, then it can easily be made up elsewhere.
Seriously at most 5hp is the difference between a 13.7 and a 13.6... and believe me 1/10th of a second is bugger-all in real life.
When I had the auto mine droned a little, but that was only when it was held at constant low revs (eg at 60km/h on very light throttle up a slight hill).
Oh, also, if yours is only a cat-back exhaust it will drone terribly!!! If this is the cause, then you should DEFINITELY get it done.
HEAD GASKET
If your car has blown a few head gaskets, your head may be a little corroded. Take it to a radiator shop and get the cooling system flushed out. Check out the alloy coolant hoses and see what condition they are in - being a similar alloy to the cylinder head means that they will exhibit similar tyres of wear to the inside of your engine!
I would suggest that you budget on pulling the engine out, having it o-ringed and fitting a copper gasket. You will get away with this for about a grand in total if you pull the engine out yourself.
OIL
To be honest I'm not much of an oil afficionado, so I'd prefer not to comment... but personally I'd get that valvetrain rattle sorted out first. Once that is done, get some cheapish brand name oil and a new oil filter. Run that through the engine for about the time it takes you to use a tank of fuel (a few hundred kms), and then drop it out.
That should hopefully flush out the system nicely. From there, run a fairly thin synthetic/semi-synthetic oil and see how it goes. If it seems to be a little smoky or makes any knocking sounds at all (particularly noticeable on cold startup or at high revs), then I'd definitely be going a little bit thicker. Trial and error, unfortunately.
Also you should ALWAYS (no excuses, they're only ten bucks or so and it's a 10 minute job at most!) change your oil filter every 5000kms and your oil every 10,000kms (every 5,000kms is better, but can get a bit expensive).
