the best way is has been said
read the forums and tech articles, but the best way is to get down and dirty and do stuff 
when something goes wrong, come on here and workout or ask how to do it, then do it.
Start with small things, then before you know it you will be offered a motor and give it a go and try put it in hehe
Thats what happend to me.
Having someone who has an idea of what they are doing also helps doing things for the first time.
