buy an old lawnmower run it with no oil till it blows up, pull it apart and fix it (buy, or hire a manual for it) then progress to a motorbike engine, then multiply the cylinders by four and get an old crappy engine to rebuild, something cheap and easy, maybe an old datsun 1200 engine or similar, join a car club and speak to the people who race thier own cars, people who tend to do a lot of thier own work on the side of the road are good people to learn from, eg prb clubmans, rally , or HQ racers are good at diagnostics on the fly and these are the people you will learn from the fastest.
