Back in the day before internet, I had my old '79 corolla and a few mates that knew some stuff, and we just bodged it along. Stripping carbies, servicing our own cars, etc.
But now I've got a mate that REALLY knows his stuff, (But only tells me what I need to know, which is a good thing, it means I research more myself), I've got a Haynes manual for my car, and the resource of the internet. www.howstuffworks.com is great for if you want to know how an auto box works, planetary gearing, torque converters, etc. They have some other nice stuff there too. It's a good resource for if you don't have a thing but want to know how it works, or, find it's not feasible to strip your engine down to nothing just to see how a particular thing in it works.
But as been mentioned by everyone so far, doing is the best way.
