This is what I posted up in the old forums:

Hey guys,

We want to capture a bunch of sounds from different cars/engines at the track day tomorrow, so I attached a mic to my MD Walkman and tested it in my car... These files are the result...

50-70km/h in second gear
144kB 6s

50-80km/h in third gear
186kB 8s

Rolling along at 60, dropping it into 2nd then accelerate
318kB 14s

Doing a U turn, accelerating slowly up to 50km/h then hard up to 100km/h
492kB 22s
If you listen closely, you can hear my engine ping Disgusted

Taking a corner and accelerating up to 120km/h.
256kB 11s
The three bumps that you hear are me going over a bridge. Smile

Coming around a corner and a medium acceleration up to 60km/h
136kB 6s

Well, at least now you girls in Corollas and Sprinters will know what a Real Man's Car is supposed to sound like. Wink

I attached a mic to my MD Walkman. Had it sitting in the passenger seat wrapped in a jumper to stop it rubbing against the seat. I also tested it with the windows open and closed and found the sound was much better with the windows closed (no wind). The recordings aren't that great though, the mic was probably too big for the Walkman to power it properly.

Getting them onto the computer is pretty easy if your recorder has a line out... You just need the cable to connect it to your sound card. Then you can use the sound recorder (Windows) to record the sounds.
Converting to mp3 requires a compressor program.
