Okay, I'm in pretty much the EXACT same boat as you at the moment, only I've been having a play over the last few months. For the same reasons as you I decided I didn't want to use paint stripper. I went to Bunnings and bought these 3M drill-mounted discs. They are like a big tough scourer, and was about to rip through all my old paint work. There was two coats on mine, some had a dodgy layer of spray putty...like half an inch thick!

These things are awesome, the black one will rip through the paint, and there is a red one which will almost bring the metal to a mirror shine.
