I presume the noises came from the back of the car rather than right beside you (ie diff rather than gearbox)?. Put the car in neutral and jack up the car. Release handbrake. Ordinarily the rear wheels should just freewheel (LSD should turn the same direction, non LSD only one will spin or they will turn in different directions, Torsens NFI). The wheels should turn smoothly and quietly. Locking or grinding is a big no no. Obviously have a bit of a look around and see what else is going on. A genuine JZA70 should have a Torsen LSD. I'd start ringing some import wreckers for some prices. The Mk3 guys will have a better idea of what something like this might cost. EDIT:Wastegate beat me!
