As far as I'm concerned, electric gauges are more reliable than mechanical gauges. Most decent electric gauges these days have a test routine built in so you know they are working each time you start the car. 99% of any problems would be from installation problems.
Also to have full accuracy with a mechanical gauge you really need to prime the hose, because as we know air is really easy compressed.
