goldfish - are a lot easier to look after, a little more hardy etc... but come in fairly boring varieties
tropical fish - a little more exotic but harder to look after - temperature and ph balance play a bigger factor (extra equipment include lights and heaters)
saltwater - lol don't even think about it
usually you progress through the three ranges as you gain more experience looking after fish
the fish as well as the setups also get alot more expensive... so like cars it depends on how much you wanna spend and how much time you want to spend on looking after them
if you're a newbie i'd probably recommend goldfish... a decent size rectangular tank with a few fish, gravel and good filtration
be prepared for a few fatalaties so dont let the kids name em until they're settled in
