When I spoke to another reputable custom clutch shop recently, they explained that almost all "button" clutches use a ceramic/metallic compound, ie: ceramic & brass. The theory behind the compound is that the brass increases the coefficient of friction (grip), whilst the ceramic balances out some of the harshness, and reduces pressure plate & flywheel wear compared to if you had a really high concentration of brass in the material. I cant imagine a clutch plate being strictly brass or ceramic only.
