I didn't like the Carinas of that generation. Actually the Carina/Corona and Celica of that period all had the same basic floorpan. Whereas the old Carina/Celica's were on the same floorpan and the Corona was different.
It is a pity that the GT-TR hardtup is not a grey import. I would imagine they would be pretty cheap now,. I have a brief article in an old Wheels where they drove a few twin cam Toyotas in Japan before the introduction of lead free in Oz, saying that we would get some of the models. We never did.
They found this Corona to be very quick (I think low 15's for the 1/4) and unlike the Corona we got here, it handled very well indeed. It would have had a similar IRS to the unleaded Avante but in much better tune as the Avante wasn't that good either.
The early coupes of this shape got the 18RGE, but then got the 3TGTE for the top model.
