go to a smash repair place and get them to hook up there chassis alignment machine to measure the distance from hub to hub that way you can't get any more acurate,
problem with good old tape measure is you may need to jack the car up to do it therefor the distance from hub to hub will change due to wheel travel so only option then would be to use ramps or a 4 post hoist,
just ask a smash repair place and they may be able to help you wih their meassuring equipment.
or just meassure from wheel center to wheel center minus the offset from each wheel and there is the hub to hub measurment.
