nother idea (since no-one mentioned it yet) is to give the gear a good whack, sometimes the shock force can sort of put a crack thru the crap that's holding it on, and mean it will come loose with a puller. is the gear expendable? maybe just grind the bugger down with an angle grinder (similar to how to get axle bearing collars off) till thin, whack the thin bit to expand it a bit. Go SST no.1
