Thu, 31 July 2003 03:08 Probably just needs a re-gas, but it could just as easily be a shagged compressor ($500+ to fix). Pretty hard to tell just by looking at it. The main things to look at in the engine bay are: - Oil: make sure it's clean, and especially make sure it isn't brown and frothy (blown headgasket). - Coolant: make sure they're using proper coolant, preferably Toyota red stuff. If it's rusty and brown, beware - the cylinder head is probably mostly corroded away. Also look for oil, another sign of a blown headgasket. - Cams/rocker gear: peak inside the oil filler and look for telltale signs of overheating (ie cooked oil, discolouration etc). - Radiator: look for corrosion, check the condition of the fins; if they flake off easily you're up for a new radiator ($400 or so). Of course you should start the engine and listen carefully for any signs of trouble. If you're not confident in your ability to spot a dud, take a qualified professional with you; it's well worth the money. [Report message to a moderator]
