Mon, 04 August 2003 12:58 Basically if the car is registered, you only have to worry about a transfer fee (I just did one, it was $25 or something) and then stamp duty is a separate fee, that is 2% of the dutiable value. No need for a greenslip or rego if the car is just being transferred into your name, as this comes with the car. The dutiable value is the price that the car is worth on the open market or the price you paid whichever is higher. This means that if you bought a $100k Ferrari for $250, you pay 2% of the $100k figure, not the $250 Technically misrepresenting the value is fraud and you can AND WILL go to jail for it if caught out. Do so at your own peril. Also note that it can cause issues with insurance payouts if you officially purchased the car for next to nothing.
