TA22-3SGTE Regular Location: MACKAY Registered: May 2002	Re: DESPERATE: thermostat for 4agze in ae86 Tue, 12 August 2003 10:19 If you mount the thermostat very close to the head in the top hose so the bulb side of the thermostat is only about 50mm from the head this may be close enough for the heat to travel in the water to open the thermostat before the head temp rises to high , If the thermostat is to far from the head the head temp will rise well above operating temp before enough heat is transfered from the head to the thermostat to open it , So when you start the motor the temp will rise to above operating temp until the thermostat opens then the temp should drop back and stabilize , To fix this problem a bit you can drill a hole about 3mm in the thermostat so there will be a small flow of water from the head and through the thermostat to help the heat flow to the thermostat which should make the temp spike less .
