Pfft, current Ford/Holden V8's have a lot more power than those things ever did. The "supercar scare" was a strange event and I doubt it will happen again.
The point remains valid though - if Toyota could reliably squeeze an extra 20hp out of their base model Corolla for $3.95, you'd better believe they'd do it. I don't think such a machine would spark another supercar scare, but an extra 20hp would be a real advantage in the super-competitive small car market.
