Yes, you can get defected baiscly be changing anything on your car to nonstandard. (that might be a bit of an exageration, but not far from the truth).
Best way to avoind defects and still get insurance, is talk to your states department of transport, find out whats legal, whats not, and what you have to do to get the go faster bits complied and passed.
It costs money, but its better than being defected, or have your insurance not pay up in case of an accident.
and like the previous posters said, not driving like an idiot also helps.
