G'day, just thought I'd say how much a difference lengthening* your shifter makes to your gear changes. Shortening is good, but you should combine that with a shorter throw while you row.
If you are just going to shorten the shifter only then here's a note on cutting that tough steel. Grab a good (or new)hacksaw blade plus a helpful, albeit game, friend with a strong grip to hold your shifter while you hack. Should only take a minute or so. Make sure you wrap an old sheet or towel around it to catch the filings. If you don't give a rats about quality or are waiting for a tap/die kit, whack a Supercheap Auto gearknob on it which is fastened on with 3 allen key bolts.
*the shifter is lengthened below the pivot point.
