As a side note, Mars being closer to to us than for 60000 years is a bit of hype.
In terms of what you can see via the naked eye or a small ground based telescope, there will be little difference in what you would have been able to see last night or in a month's time.
I suggest you pick a good seeing night (still, low humidity) within the next month and venture out to one of the local observatories or astronomical societies - most have open nights once or twice a week.
