sigma? (wouldnt i have to change the steering column?

You may possibly have to work out a clever way of joining the column to the box. I don't know because I haven't really looked into it in any great detail.

subframe? what the?

Our Mk2s have a subframe. The engine and suspension bolt up to this. This subframe bolts up to the body. It's the big black thing under the front half of the car!

isnt woeful bad?

Correct. The steering angles have been very carefully worked out by some poor Japanese engineer 30 years ago. Just whacking a rack or differnt box in there without due consideration of these angles could result in terrible steering and handling.

Will reconing make an improvement?

If your steering is sloppy and you have used all the adjustment, then recoing it will result in an improvement. However, I would check the usual suspects like worn tie rod ends and ball joints.

what do you use for the mx23?

I actually use the steering box. I fitted new tie rod ends and ball joints. I have ceramic coated the extractors to keep the heat down, and run a power steering fluid cooler.
