My 77 celica had a real long shifter, it stuck op real high near the dash. When I went to cut it I realised I couldn't as the celica shifter gets thicker near the bottom so I couldn't cut any more off, so I just cut it in 2 places, taking out about 2"-3" and also taking out the fat bit, and welded it back together. much eaiser than a tap-and-die, I used a metal dropsaw to cut mine.
