Dude! Very sorry to hear. 
It could've ended up being a dead shock. I had a similar experience once.
There's a corner near my house that's wide and smooth. I used to always get sideways around that corner (which with a 21R-C meant that you tried to rip the steering wheel off when you turn). Anyway, came home one day and did my usual thing and the rear end just swung out and out and OUT. Huge over correction had me ending up parked perpendicular to the road!
I go: "WTF?! This can't be right". So I drove back and attempted the corner again. Same thing happened!!!
So I slowly drove home, very shaken, thinking that the laws of physics had changed on me.
Next morning, I look under the car and my rear left shock had snapped...
