Severe vibrations can be caused by a number of things - poor wheel alignment, out-of-round tyres, stuffed uni joint, worn centre bearing etc. If you're not sure where it's coming from it may be an idea to take it to a sterring/suspension shop and get them to check it out.

Your auto has a kickdown cable which is obviously out of adjustment, hence your unusual shift patterns. Get yourself a service manual, it will explain the correct procedure for adjusting the auto.

Swapping in a 5-speed is pretty easy (I've done it in an RA23) but it's a fiddly job and will take a fair bit of time. It's really only worth doing if you plan to keep the car for a long time, otherwise you might as well get rid of the car and buy another one with a 5-speed in it already.

Dropping an 18R-G into an RA40 is also quite easy, but don't bother trying to put an 18R-G head on your existing block - it pretty much involves stripping the entire engine and rebuilding it again. Totally not worth it when complete 18R-G's can be had cheaply.
